There’s something pretty magical about a small town when it’s turned upside down. For most of the year, Khatu Shyam just cruises along as a little pilgrimage destination – a steady stream of devotees trickling in, peaceful evenings, the constant hum of faith but not too loud. But during Phalgun Mela, the whole place erupts into something entirely different. It’s like a vibrant, living, breathing sea of red and devotion.
I got to experience that the hard way – by getting myself to Khatu Shyam smack in the middle of it all, booking into Anmol Ratan Dharamshala with no idea what I was letting myself in for.
The Mela Magic: What on Earth is Phalgun Mela
If you don’t know – Phalgun Mela is one of the biggest deals at Khatu Shyam Ji around. It happens in the month of Phalgun (February-March) and it’s basically a mad dash of devotees pouring in from all corners of the country – Rajasthan, Haryana, Punjab, Delhi, UP and loads of other places. The town, built with peace in mind, gets turned upside down and has to put up with hundreds of thousands of pilgrims.
Why on earth I’m Glad I Chose Anmol Ratan
The thing with staying at Anmol Ratan Dharamshala in Khatu Shyam during the Phalgun Mela is, it’s not just a place to crash for the night. It’s the thing that keeps you going. It’s a sanity rescue team when things get too much. And in this case, it’s a steady hand on a wild ride.
Khatu Shyam during mela is complete mayhem – huge crowds, hours long queues for darshan, the markets are packed out. And after that, you need some place that’s going to be your safe haven – a place to wind down and regroup, get your bearings before you plunge back into all that.
Anmol Ratan is that place.
I met a lovely family from Haryana in the dining hall – three generations all travelling together, grandma included. They’d been coming to this dharamshala for ten years every Phalgun Mela. “The hotel just wasn’t going to work for us,” the daughter-in-law told me, serving her mother-in-law first as you’d expect. “Here, we just feel like we’re being looked after. Someone gets what pilgrims need, you know?”
And she was right on the money. The dharamshala staff, seasoned veterans of the mela mayhem, had everything running like clockwork.
What to Expect: A Pilgrim’s No-Nonsense Guide
So you’re planning on joining the Phalgun Mela crowd sometime – well, I wish someone’d told me a few things before i went:
Book Your Room Well In Advance – Trust Me, You Don’t Want To Be In A Last-Minute Scramble
Rooms at Anmol Ratan in Khatu Shyam are like gold dust during the Phalgun Mela. I mean seriously – they get snapped up months beforehand. Devotees who come back year in,year out are onto this trick & they usually get their spot secure early. If you’re planning on going, don’t hang about.
Pack Some Patience, Along with Your Other Essentials
The queues for darshan are a serious business – we’re talking hours on end & not just a casual stroll to the shops. But weirdly enough – nobody seems to lose their cool. Strangers lend each other water bottles, families keep an eye on each other’s kids & the wait becomes this whole other kind of meditation. And then when you get back to the Dharamshala, knackered but content, the humble bed feels like the ultimate luxury.
Food During the Mela – What to Expect
Meal times at Anmol Ratan are usually pretty mellow, but during the Phalgun Mela they transform into a slick little operation. People eat in shifts, but still seem to enjoy it. The grub remains simple but wholesome & served with a smile – just like any other time. I saw this elderly volunteer serving up hundreds of meals, smiling at each person she passed – that image has stuck with me.
Walking Out into The Market
Step out of Anmol Ratan & into the Mela market & you’re suddenly in the midst of Khatu Shyam at its most vibrant. Stores are spilling out onto the streets, the air’s full of marigolds & hot jalebis, & everywhere you look there’s the sound of vendors hawking their wares & devotees negotiating with them. It’s chaotic, yeah. But it’s a good kind of chaotic.
The Night I’ll Never Forget
One evening during my stay, I couldn’t get to sleep, the energy of the day still buzzing around in me. So I went for a walk out to the little courtyard outside the Dharamshala – hoping to get some air.
But I wasn’t alone
Half a dozen other pilgrims were out there in the dark, just sitting & waiting for sleep to come. One of them, a woman, caught my eye & smiled – that was it, no word needed. We were just two strangers, from different lives, different cities…but in that moment, sitting out in the quiet courtyard of Anmol Ratan Dharamshala in Khatu Shyam, listening to the temple bells, we were as one.
That, I reckon, is what Phalgun Mela is really all about. Not just all the grand kerfuffle & celebrations, but those quiet little moments of connection between fellow travellers on the same path.
Tips From Someone Who Wised Up the Hard Way
If you’re still figuring out your travel plans for the Phalgun Mela – take it from me, you really should’ve gotten on top of booking your spot already.
- Double-check that your booking is confirmed before you even think about setting off – and then triple-check just to be sure. It’s crazy busy, mistakes happen.
- Pack light but pack smart – the dharamshala will have the basics covered, but you’ll want to bring your own toiletries, medication and comfiest shoes you can manage. You’ll be walking a lot.
- Make sure you’ve got those emergency numbers handy. The dharamshala staff might be able to track down someone who can help if you get into trouble.
- Embrace all the people. Don’t fight it. Just go with it and you’ll find the whole thing starts to feel much more enjoyable.
- Spend some time inside the dharamshala itself – don’t just sleep and jet off first light. Hang out in the common areas, strike up a conversation with the other pilgrims, grab a cup of chai with whoever’s sitting next to you. I ended up making some really close friendships back at Anmol Ratan, reminiscing about the day and swapping stories – it was the stuff that memories are made of.
The Return Home
Getting out of Khatu Shyam after Phalgun Mela feels a lot like waking up from a dream. The place is just so over the top with colour, energy – it really leaves a mark on you. But what really sticks with me is a deep sense of gratitude for the place that felt like a second home to me – Anmol Ratan Dharamshala.
Truth is, a hotel just wouldn’t have been the same – it would’ve given me a bed, but Anmol Ratan gave me a place to come back to, a group of people who i could share all that with – and a whole bunch of small moments of beauty in the midst of all that chaos.
If you’re not on the fence yet – then go for it. Go to the Phalgun Mela and if you can – book your stay at Anmol Ratan. Just don’t wait – it’s those early movers who get the good stuff.
