The Legend of Barbarik: The Unbeatable Warrior<\/h1>\n\n\n\n

Barbarik was the grandson of Bhima (from Pandavas) and son of Ghatotkacha. He was trained in warfare by his mother Maurvi and was unbeatable and righteous from childhood.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Through penance Barbarik got three infallible arrows (Teen Baan<\/em>) from Lord Shiva:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

  1. One arrow marked to be destroyed.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  2. One arrow marked to be protected.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  3. The third arrow would execute the command flawlessly.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

    These boons made him invincible. To add to this Agni Dev gifted him a powerful bow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Barbarik vowed to always support the weaker side in battle – a vow that would lead to his ultimate sacrifice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Krishna\u2019s Test and the Sacrifice<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    As the Kurukshetra War was about to start, Barbarik was preparing to fight for Pandavas who seemed weaker. But Krishna knew Barbarik\u2019s vow meant he would keep switching sides and ultimately lead to destruction of all warriors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Disguised as a Brahmin, Krishna tested Barbarik by asking him to target all leaves of a tree. Even when Krishna hid a leaf under his foot, Barbarik\u2019s arrow found it – proving his power was beyond measure.To save the world from destruction, Krishna asked Barbarik for his head as charity (sheesh daan<\/em>). Without hesitation Barbarik offered it, requesting only to witness the war. Krishna blessed him and declared that in Kaliyuga he would be worshipped as Shyam.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    The Story of Khatu Shyam Ji<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    Centuries later, Barbarik\u2019s head was unearthed in Khatu (Rajasthan) when milk from a cow flowed spontaneously on the burial spot. King Roopsingh Chauhan built the first temple in 1027 CE after receiving a divine vision.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    The temple in Sikar district, Rajasthan, is built with white marble. It has the Jagmohan Hall with mythological paintings, silver sanctum doors covered with gold, and the holy Shyam Kund where the head was found.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
