Lets get down to it, most of the time when we’re traveling, what’s really on our mind is getting a decent hotel. A hassle-free check in, a spotless room and just a quiet few minute with the housekeeper, and you’re good to go. That’s just a straight up transaction – pay for some peace and quiet and that’s it. I used to think that’s just the way it was, the only way it ever could be, but then I stumbled into the Anmol Ratan Dharamshala in Khatu Shyam<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Walking into Anmol Ratan was anything but an impersonal check in process. It felt almost like walking into my aunt’s house for the first time in years, being welcomed with a warm smile by someone who just happens to be distant enough that you don’t know them all that well. No formal reception desk for you, just a little office and a caretaker who actually bothered to ask you how your journey was – that was the first hint that this place was a little different from your run of the mill hotel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The thing is, a hotel just sells you a room. An 8 by 8 bit of space. A place like Anmol Ratan Dharamshala<\/a> on the other hand – they give you more than just a roof over your head. Everyone else is a customer at a hotel but here at Anmol Ratan, you’re a guest – and not just that, you’re part of a family of sorts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At breakfast you’re not just sitting there eating on your own – you’re swapping stories with the guy next to you about your trip to the temple. You swap directions, swap stories and sometimes you even just sit there in silence, lost in your own thoughts for a bit. Walking out of a hotel you might still be able to picture a great view or remember a comfortable bed. Walking out of Anmol Ratan Dharamshala in Khatu Shyam however, I couldn’t shake a feeling that came from somewhere much deeper than my head.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It wasn’t just the view that stuck with me, not just how comfy the bed was – it was the caretaker who’d actually ask if I was doing alright after I’d gotten some rest, I remembered. And that easy friendly smile I saw pass by in the hallway from another traveller who was also there for the same reason. But what really stuck with me was this general sense of security I felt, a sense that I was in a place that had been built not with making a profit in mind but with genuinely helping people. A hotel might just put a roof over your head for the night. But a place like Anmol Ratan Dharamshala – even if you’re only there for a night or 2 – lifts your spirits in a way that’s hard to put into words.
